New Dancer Information
Highland Dancing, which requires the endurance and strength of an athlete and the artistry of a dancer, is the traditional solo dancing of Scotland. Highland Dancing can be done for recreation or in preparation for competitions. It is a great way to develop good coordination, posture, aerobic capacity and strength. We teach from the BATD curriculum. We offer classes from Primary Recreational up to Competitive Premier. In order to be a successful competitive dancer, students require many hours of practice and study over a number of years. BATD (The British Association of Teachers of Dancing) Exams are offered once a year with a BATD examiner.
Please arrive on time for class with T-shirt, shorts, knee socks and ghillies (soft dance shoes are acceptable). Don't forget your water, notebook and pen!
Competitive Dancing
Dancers compete in groups which are Primary, Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Premier. Dancers are awarded merit for their timing, appearance, position, and execution of the dance steps. Dancers are judged by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing adjudicators.
Medals are awarded on the basis of points gained by placing in each dance. Trophies are awarded to the dancer with the most points within their age group and category. Trophies are not awarded to primary dancers.
Dancers that enter competitions, must be registered with ScotDance. Registration forms are available through the ScotDance Canada website. With your registration, you are required to review the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dance (SOBHD) Code of Ethics, which is applicable to Judges, Teachers, Organizers, Parents and Dancers.
